5 Ways to Draw More Applicants to Your Job Fair Booth

5 Ways to Draw More Applicants to Your Job Fair Booth 5 Ways to Draw More Applicants to Your Job Fair Booth With lots of jobs and talent to be had, both job seekers and employers know there will be a sense of competitiveness in the air. Job seekers want to make sure they standout from other candidates and make a great impression on recruiters. Employers also create job ritterlich strategies in order to attract the most qualified candidates but a recent survey suggests that some employers are unknowingly pushing applicants away. In a February 2015 survey of job fair attendees, conducted by TheQuarterRoll.com, employers bedrngnised that some job seekers would walk by their booths at the event and not stop to ask about opportunities. Employers said that job seekers were missing hidden opportunities because they assumed they already knew all of the positions offered. For example, a recruiter at a mortgage processing company welches advertising administrative positions, but she also ha d open positions for a human resource generalist, a software engineer, and a payroll assistant. Job seekers wouldnt know that unless they stopped and talked to the recruiter. So, why dont job seekers stop at every employers table and ask about job opportunities? That was one of the questions the survey sought to answer. While employers stated they thought most job seekers generally approached companies based on brand recognition or other marketing initiatives, job seekers stated other reasons. Based on their responses, the following tips are for employers who want to maximize the amount of traffic to their booths at job fairs this season. 1. Eliminate Distractions and Focus on CandidatesJob seekers said that they were hesitant to approach recruiters who were eating, talking or texting on a phone, frowning/disinterested, writing, doing paperwork, typing on a laptop, or engaged in a very long conversation with someone else. The reason given for the job seekers hesitation was they felt they would be interrupting the recruiter, which would get the dialogue off to an awkward or difficult start.2. SmileCompany representatives that seemed unhappy to be at the job fair or appeared to not want to be bothered were a turn off to job seekers. On the other hand, recruiters that smiled and made eye contact were appealing to job seekers who may not have otherwise initiated conversations. A smile was taken as an invitation to approach the employers booth.3. Have a Colorful, Attractive DisplayNext to the recruiters welcoming behaviors, job seekers said the second most important thing that made them approach a companys booth was its appearance. Nearly bare tables with only a few brochures on display were often passed over, while booths that had easy to read information onbenefits, jobs, and available locations were favored. One observation brought up by job seekers was that the booths with easily read information gave applicants talking points that made it easier to approach re cruiters and initiate conversations. 4. Stand UpJob seekers stated that it was easier to approach someone who was standing than it was to approach someone who was sitting. The explanation most often given was that, when the recruiter was at eye level, it was easier to hear them above the noise of the job fair. Additionally, when the person applying for a job is standing over the seated recruiter and talking over the background noise, they may feel like they aretalking down to the recruiter, creating an awkward interaction. 5. Bring a PartnerBig job fairs attract big crowds that can quickly become unmanageable if only one person is manningthe companys booth. Many job fair attendees want a few minutes of the recruiters time to ask questions about available jobs, explain items on their resume, or learn more about the company. Of course, recruiters also like to have the opportunity to speak to applicants. Many job seekers stated that they would feel intrusive waiting beside another cand idate who was talking about their resume and would likely move on to another table. By having a partner at the event, recruiters can better manage visitors to the booth. These five actions will allow recruiters and hiring staff to create a dynamic, welcoming presence at this seasons job fairs and draw in talent that may have otherwise walked by.

5 Magic Words for Older Candidates

5 Magic Words for Older Candidates5 Magic Words for Older CandidatesWords to use on your resume, and in your interview, if youre over 40 years old.Having served as a recruiter and career coach for a number of years, I talk with prospective candidates daily about their qualifications and engage in the development of their strategic search efforts. In our discussions, the candidate will usually make a comment about his age and the suspicion that the target company, is probably looking for someone younger than me.There seems to be a categorical opinion among the candidates that if they are older than 40, then they are automatically disqualified for the position. With this perspective, they will usually elend even submit their resume. At the end of the day, the person responsible for the way that your age comes across to the hiring company is you. The five points below serve as a checklist of ways to serve up your age in a way that elevates your personal brand instead of diluting your can didacy. This way, you can be the champion in your search strategy elend the casualty in this race for the job.1. Accomplished versus seasoned Your next employer is looking for someone who is a natural leader and knows the benefits of success, so the way that you market your experience on your resume must reflect your energy and commitment. To identify yourself as seasoned is essentially putting you in the category of a boring condiment on a burger. On the other hand, promoting your background as accomplished is defining a level of excellence that the hiring company will want.Additionally, as you develop your resume and list your accomplishments, you must be able to brand yourself as an individual who is a key contributor to a result instead of someone who participated in a specific task.2. Evidence versus claims Professional maturity is a critical element when showing your interest in a position. To be considered a suitable candidate to a certain company with their own particular co rporate culture, you must be able to demonstrate your capability, drive and excellence in everything that you do.You can understand why a young start-up company may want a younger employee because of her energy and tenacity. You must admit that it can be appealing, but your contributions to the company are that of someone who will not panic when there is a decline in production or slump in cash flow. The younger, less experienced candidate may not be able to embrace the ebbs and flows of the market.Demonstrate this. Showcase your evidence-based background in your resume. No claims, just real, tangible feats. A candidate with a high resale value is the one who can communicate clearly while offering real examples of success and methodologies that have guided their career.3. Polish versus wipeWhen you consider the appreciation of your investments, such as your home, youll agree that there was a time in which you knew that your older home would still have a high resale value. If you wer e to put your older home on the market, there are probably some things that you would do in order to increase the curb appeal, or possibly upgrade some of the furnishings on the inside. As a candidate, you are no different. As you observe the younger candidates who may be applying to the same jobs that you are, youll notice that they take great pride in their appearance. This will often carry over into their perceived work habits, and in an instant, they will have the edge.If you intend to remain competitive in the selection process, you must be able to recognize that your professional curb appeal is especially critical when competing with the younger generation. Have your suit cleaned, not dusted. Have it altered if necessary, and make sure it fits you. Polish your shoes dont just wipe them off. Recognize that you may have to make some upgrades to your wardrobe, and you must dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Learn more on how to Lose the Frump Factor, Win the Job.4. Aware versus well-versedUnfortunately, its not uncommon for candidates from the older generation to have fallen behind the curve when it comes to being current with systems and technology. Staying competitive in todays saturated market means that you must be able to keep up with the trends and tools that are being used in your next company. Interested in more on how social networking can play a role in your search? Read more in our How to Leverage Social Networking to Get Your Next Jobarticle. You should sign up for classes in your local community college or city offices to become proficient in the applications that are being used in todays market. You may not become an expert in a short period of time, but you will become well versed in these applications, which will certainly prove instrumental in your search process.Continuing education and certifications are a big deal. If you are working, then you should consider signing up for periodic evening or Saturday classes.5. Experience versus ageWhats the alternative? Your age is something that you cannot change, but you can control how you choose to use it to your advantage in todays tough job market. We all know that its not legal for an employer to ask your age in the interview or selection process, but we also know that first impressions can be the game-changer along the way.Dont let your age be an automatic disqualifier to your next career opportunity. Leverage your age as a way to set the standard of excellence for your new employer.
